Venus Williams joins sister Serena Williams in withdrawing from US Open
Venus Williams has withdrawn from the 2017 US Open owing to injury, becoming the third American woman to do so after Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin.
Venus, a two-time US Open winner and former world No. 1, announced the news in a video on social media.
The 41-year-old, who has won seven Grand Slam championships, expressed her disappointment at not being able to compete in her “favorite slam” and wished the other competitors success.
Serena, the younger sister, had to withdraw earlier on Wednesday due to a strained hamstring, marking the first time since 2003 that neither has competed in the event at Flushing Meadows.
The Sisters join a lengthy list of players who have been forced to withdraw from the event owing to injury, including Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, and Simona Halep.
