‘Omo Ghetto’ is now officially the Nollywood highest grossing film of all time.
According to a statement released by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria, the 2020 comedy film shattered a four-year record kept by Kemi Adetiba’s 2016 film “The Wedding Party” after it grossed N468,036,300 after three straight weeks of holding the number one spot (CEAN).
“The Wedding Party” on the other hand has raked in N453,000,000 while its sequel “The Wedding Party 2” took the third spot with N433,197,377.
Although this comes as a surprise as the pandemic has devastated the Nigerian entertainment industry, tweeted Kemi Adetiba, who produced Wedding Party (the former highest-grossing film);
Only want to remind you all that Funke Akindele is about to break the record for WEDDING PARTY 1… If she hasn’t already broken it. If you realize in a non-covid year how Amazing this accomplishment will be, so you’ll understand how crazier it is in a covid year. GINGERED, I am!
The film, starring the likes of Funke Akindele in the dual role as Ayomide and Lefty, Tina Mba, Adebayo Salami(Oga Bello), Chioma Akpotha, Bimbo Thomas, Eniola Badmus, Deyemi Okanlawon, Zubby Michael, Mercy Aigbe, Timini Egbuson, Alex Ekubo was premiered on December 25, 2020.
It is a sequel to the ‘Omo Ghetto’ 2010 trilogy and follows Shalewa aka Lefty’s tumultuous life (Funke Akindele).
