Kanye West prototype Yeezy sneakers sell for a record 1.8million USD .
Kanye West‘s patent Nikes, which he wore during his Grammy Awards performances of “Hey Mama” and “Stronger” in 2008, have broken the record for the most expensive pair of shoes ever sold.
West’s so-called ‘Grammy Worn’ Nike Air Yeezy 1 sold for $1.8 million in a private auction, according to Sotheby’s. RARES, a sneaker crowdfunding marketplace, bought it.
The price is the highest ever publicly reported for a sneaker sale, and it’s also the first time a pair of sneakers has sold for more than $1 million. The private selling was arranged by Sotheby’s.
The West and Mark Smith-designed size 12 shoes are made of soft black leather with perforated details in the upper and a tonal Swoosh on the heel overlay. The forefoot brace is iconic Yeezy, and the signature Y medallion lacelocks are neon pink.
The price is almost three times the previous auction mark for a sneaker, which was set at Christie’s in 2020 for $615,000. The basketball superstar wear a pair of 1985 Jordan 1s when he reportedly broke the backboard during a pre-season game in Italy.
In a tweet, Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of streetwear and contemporary collectibles, said, “We are delighted with the performance, which has nearly tripled the highest price on record.” ‘Kanye West’s legacy as one of the most prominent apparel and sneaker designers of our time, as well as the Yeezy brand he has created, which has become an industry titan, is reflected in the deal.’
