Immigrant Teenagers to be Accommodated at Dallas Convention Center
So, the United States government pushes to accommodate up to 3,000 immigrant teenagers at the downtown convention center in Dallas as it thrives to contain the influx of border crossing of youths into the country which strains the immigration system.
It was discovered that there were more than 100thousand illegal crossings in February — which pose to be far more than all but 4 months of Trump’s presidency. This upsurge posses a huge challenge to President Biden, and as a result, about about to take up an immigration legislation.
It has been concluded that the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center to be occupied for a period of 3 months starting from this week. The facility is said to be used to accommodate males between the ages of 15 and 17,in a memo received by The Associated Press sent on Monday to the Dallas City Council members.
Due to this, there will be haste opening of the facilities nationwide to place immigrant kids who are held by the Border Patrol, as children can only be detained for not more than 3 days which s currently happening as a result of lack of space in the HHS system.
It is reported that a tent facility which is managed by the Border Patrol in Donna, some 804km south of Dallas, currently accommodates not less than 1,000 kids and teens, some even as young as 4.
Alejandro Mayorkas, Homeland Security Secretary, on Saturday, had charged the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist in management and care for kids crossing the border.
“I’m really proud of the agents of the Border Patrol, who have been working tirelessly in hard times temporarily taking care of children in our care,” Mayorkas said . “Yet, as I have always been saying countless times, a Border Patrol facility is not for children to stay.”
When he was asked about preparation of accommodating migrant teenagers at the convention center, Jen Psaki, White House press secretary, said that the administration seeking more facilities for unaccompanied children however, she’s in the process of considering specific arrangement in Dallas.
The upsurge number of kid arrivals has raised concerns, with the Congress taking up immigration legislation this week. Biden puts smile on pro-immigration advocates faces after backing a bill to provide a path to citizenship to all estimated 11 million people in the United States illegally. He has also suspended numerous of Trump-era policies to discourage asylum, which includes the one forcing them to wait in Mexico for court hearings in the United States.
Biden has also retained some pandemic-related powers which allow him to immediately eject people who come in to the country illegally. This powers also deny them a chance of seeking asylum.
United States authorities accounted for 9,457 times for children traveling alone in February, this closely doubles the figure in January and the marks highest since May 2019, when the number recorded got close to 12,000 at the peak of a Trump-era surge.
