The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has postponed the introduction of its Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), also known as eNaira, which was scheduled for October 1, Nigeria’s independence day.

The CBN chose to postpone the launch because to Nigeria’s independence celebrations, according to CBN spokesperson Osita Nwanisobi, who met with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, September 30.

“CBN defers eNaira rollout to commemorate Independence Day,” said the announcement.

“Ahead of the anticipated launch of Nigeria’s Central Bank Digital Currency, known as eNaira, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Spokesman, Mr. Osita Nwanisobi, says the planned unveiling on October 1, 2021 has been postponed due to other key activities lined up to commemorate the country’s 61st Independence Anniversary.”

He further emphasized that there was no need to be concerned, as the CBN and other partners were striving to make the digital currency useful for all consumers, especially those in rural regions and the unbanked.
