Barcelona have no soul without Lionel Messi
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, a legendary German striker for Bayern Munich, has claimed that Barcelona would be devoid of soul without Lionel Messi.
This was mentioned by the former Bayern Munich CEO as he congratulated his former club for thrashing Barcelona 3-0 at the Nou Camp in their first group game in the UEFA Champions League in 2021/22.
He believes Barcelona would be a different club without Messi, who has been a vital character for the team for the past two decades.
He told German newspaper Bild, “They [Bayern] played outstandingly well and deserved to win.”
“It’s too early to talk about favorites,” says the narrator. The knockout stage is where [the competition] truly begins.
“You can tell how strategically they [Barca] did if you look at the team. Their souls have been taken out without Messi. They are going through a terrible period. It was critical that he be sold. With him, the Spanish league has scored an own goal.”
After the defeat on Tuesday night, Barcelona president Joan Laporta and manager Ronaldo Koeman had a “very unpleasant discussion,” according to Spanish football news outlet El Chiringuito TV.
According to the article, the Catalan giants may have already set up a prospective successor if Koeman is freed of his duties, with Johan Cruyff’s son Jordi expected to take over as interim manager.
